2010 Scholars

Alejandro Oliveros

Mentor: Dr. Chengyu Shi

The Atonement Academy
Alejandro is academically two years ahead of his peers in mathematics. He participates in soccer and basketball. He also enjoys singing in the choir and volunteers every summer with Vacation Bible School.

Alejandro will be attending Texas A&M – Aerospace Engineering in the fall of 2013.

Andres Legerreta

Mentor: Dr. Alina Maloyan

Central Catholic High School
Andres has won first place at science fairs, is a member of NJHS and has received numerous academic and citizenship awards. He was an honors student at the Instituto Cumbres in Mexico winning first place in Clase Publica. He is a member of the AAAA Swim team and plays competitive soccer and baseball. He volunteers at the Sunshine Cottage and at the Incarnate Word Villa.

Andres has been offered the following scholarships: Academic Excellence Scholarship Award, Louis B Stokes Alliance for Minorities STEM Scholarship from UH, Provost’s Gold Scholarship – Baylor University, William C. Parker Scholarship and the Provost Scholarship – University of Kentucky. He will be attending University of Houston in Biomedical Engineering in the fall of 2013.

Angelina Isibor

Mentor: Dr. Shane Rea

Health Careers High School
Angelina is the treasurer of HOSA, and a member of the Latin club, cross country and track teams. She has also participated in the Math and Science UIL and successfully competed in science, math, spelling, history, maps, charts, graphs and dictionary skills in UIL winning numerous ribbons.

She will be attending Rice University on a full scholarship.

Brianna Bal

Mentor: Dr. Carolina Livi

The Atonement Academy
Brianna graduated salutatorian of her class at St. Anthony’s Catholic Middle School. While at St. Anthony’s her GEAR Robotics team placed 2nd at the UTSA competition. She is currently a member of the National Hispanic Institute, Earth and Writing clubs, Student Ambassador, Med Team and volunteers at the United Way of San Antonio. She is also a member of the Antonian band.

Brianna was offered the following scholarships: The University of New Mexico, The University of Nebraska, Arizona State University, and The University of Texas at Dallas, Valero Alamobowl Scholarship, UTSA Honors College Presidential Scholarship, UTSA Writing Program Incoming Freshman Scholarship. She will be attending The University of Texas at San Antonio – FAME Program in the fall of 2013.

Brittany Hardy

Mentor: Dr. Rajeshwar Tekmal

Alamo Heights High School
Brittany is a member of Student Council, Young Republicans and basketball. She also participates with the National Charity League volunteering for Any Baby Can, the Humane Society, Morningside Manor, the Food bank and is now the Cultural Event Coordinator for the NCL. She is also a first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

She will be attending Millsaps College on a full scholarship.

Cecile Sorio

Cecile Sorio has been assigned to Squadron 12 within the Texas A & M Corps of Cadets and received the Best Fish Award.

Derek Lam

Mentor: Dr. Zhenyu Qin

Keystone School
Derek has won Best in Show at the Texas Science and Engineering fair. He has competed in ISWEEEP, MILSET and PSIA science competitions. He is a member of the French Club and has participated in various concert/fund raising events with the Anna Keifer Piano Studio. He is a math tutor and volunteers at the Boerne Public Library and the Witte Museum.

Derek has been offered Lowe’s Scholarship, Merit Scholarships. He will be attending the Rose – Hulman Institute of Technology studying Engineering in the fall of 2013.

Flor Cita Dunn

Mentor: Dr. Consuelo Walss-Bass

International School of the Americas
Cita was a student of Alamo Heights High School before transferring to the ISA. Following a prolonged illness, Cita was home schooled for a period of time which then allowed her to return to her original class and excel her classmates in advanced mathematics. She is now a member of the Friendship Bridge, Girl Scouts of America, Student Council, and Volleyball.

Flor was offered the following scholarships: Model UN Scholarship, University of Rochester Research Grant. She will be attending University of Rochester in the fall of 2013.

Gregory Petershack

Mentor: Dr. Consuelo Walss-Bass

Central Catholic High School
Greg is a member of the swim team, and actively participates in the Latin and Physics Clubs at school. He completed high school level Algebra courses and Literary Genres classes while in middle school and he enjoys playing basketball in his spare time.

Gregory will be attending Texas A&M University (Engineering) on 3 scholarhips, including the Valedictorian Scholarship.

Ian A. Hardy

Claudia Taylor Johnson High School
Ian is a member of the Speech & Debate Club, Boy Scouts of America and a Church group leader. He has many achievements in middle school that include GT Algebra Most Outstanding Student, Most Outstanding Student in High Powered Rocketry, Most Outstanding Student in Pre-AP Science, Outstanding Academic Achievement, and recipient of the Superintendent’s Award.

Ian was offered the following scholarships: Brigham Young University Scholarship (full tuition), Utah New Century Scholarship, Westminster College Scholarship, Weber State University Presidential Scholarship, Intel ISEF Third Grand Prize Award. He will be attending Brigham Young University in the fall of 2013.

Jacob Carmichael

Mentor: Dr. Zhenyu Qin

Central Catholic High School
Jacob is a member of the Academic UIL Team, JROTC Physical Training Club, Tennis team and a volunteer of the church organization Edge. He was also a PREP participant throughout middle school. All this has driven him to excel in math and science and be described by his teachers as one of the top students in their experience.

Jacob was offered the following scholarships: $50,725 – School of Nursing and Health Studies at Georgetown University. He will be attending Georgetown University in the fall of 2013.

Joi Stevens

Mentor: Dr. Brian Wickes

St. Mary’s Hall
Joi is a Junior Statesman of America and in the Model United Nations program. She is the co-chair of programs for the National Society of Black Engineers and the NSBE Jr. Chapter’s TMAL team. She has been listed as a Top of America, is in the NAACP Jr. Chapter, and volunteers for Habitat for Humanity, Elf Louise and the Spina Bifida Foundation.

Kayla Darvin

Mentor: Dr. Sara Espinoza

The Atonement Academy
Kayla is a member of NJHS, a short distance runner on the track team, volunteer at the animal care services and plays the piano. She was also the first recipient of a $10,000 scholarship awarded by the Atonement Academy as a result of her academic success in middle school.

Kayla was offered the following scholarships: $20,000 a year – SMU, $1000 a year – Texas A&M, free tuition for one year at any Public Texas University for Valedictorian, $16,000 a year from College of St. Mary. She will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall of 2013.

Lauren Lill

Mentor: Dr. Teresa Pais-Johnson

Brandeis High School
Lauren has been playing the cello since the 3rd grade and currently is in the Varsity Orchestra and the San Antonio regional Orchestra. She enjoys academics and is a member of the Gifted and Talented Program. She also volunteers with many organizations in the greater San Antonio area.

Lauren will be attending UCLA in the fall of 2013.

Neil Klein

Mentor: Dr. Rochelle Buffenstein

Marion High School
Neil has won several science achievement awards and competed at the state level in Modern Oratory. He participates in the Debate Club and is a council delegate for the New Berlin 4H. He is an active member of the senior youth fellowship at his church and he volunteers with the Guadalupe County Management Information Service.

Neil will be attending Texas Tech University in the fall of 2013.

Peter Gonzalez

Mentor: Dr. Murat Digicaylioglu

Central Catholic High School
Peter is a member of the Junior Varsity Soccer team, JROTC, and National Hispanic Institute. He is also a Youth Leadership Conference participant and is described as the top student in his Biology Honors Class. Peter spent his summer before high school taking Integrated Physics and Chemistry in order to enroll in higher level courses during the academic year.

Peter was offered the following scholarships: University of Notre Dame, University of California: – Los Angeles – Berkeley – San Diego – Santa Barbara, University of Texas at Austin – $5,000, Baylor University – $56,000, Trinity University – $72,000, St. Mary’s University – $86,000. He will be attending University of Notre Dame in the fall of 2013.

Ruby Gibson

Mentor: Chengyu Shi

Robert Cole High School
Ruby is a member of the Junior ROTC, Varsity band, NJHS, Student Council and spent her summers studying in the PREP program. She is also a dancer with the Parks and Recreation Dance Troupe and the San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet.

Ruby was offered the following scholarships: Army ROTC, Valero Alamo Bowl, SGM Rufus Pryor Memorial, AUSA Maloy, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Windcrest Fireman’s, Randolph Officers Spouse Wives, Cougar Pride, Breakthrough for Women.

Scarlette Hsia

Mentor: Dr. Carolina Livi

Claudia Taylor Johnson High School
Scarlette is a member of the Latin club, Math UIL, Varsity Orchestra and volunteers to play music at restaurants and banks. She attended three years of PREP and was awarded a four year scholarship by St. Mary’s University.

Scarlette was offered the following scholarships: Top 10 percent Scholarship, Florence Emma Eichler Scholarship, USAA Golden Eagle Scholarship, Jimmy Elizabeth Harper and Ethel Harper Scholarship. She will be attending UT Austin in the fall of 2013.

Selina Kadiwal

Mentor: Dr. Teresa Pais-Johnson

Ronald Reagan High School
Selina is a member of the National Art Honor Society and the Health Occupations Students of America. She has won numerous ribbons and was a 4th place winner of the Spelling UIL. She has also attended PREP for the past two years and is described by her instructors as a model student and leader.

Selina was offered the following scholarships: Top 10% scholarship (UT), Presidential scholarship (Incarnate Word). She will be attending the University of Texas at Austin in the fall of 2013.

Spencer Brady

Mentor: Dr. Craig Manifold

Churchill High School
Spencer is a member of the debate club, football, Winners Circle and Younglife. In the past, he has participated in basketball, golf, soccer and cross country running. He also attended PREP while in middle school putting him ahead of his class academically. Spencer is described as exemplary and of high moral character.

Spencer was offered the following scholarships: University of Texas at Austin, McCombs School of Business, United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs – $414,000 (Nominated by both US Congressman Marsha Blackburn & US Senator Lamar Alexander), University of Texas at Dallas – National Merit $150,000, University of Oklahoma – National Merit $100,000, University of Alabama – National Merit $106,400, Arizona State University – National Merit $101,100, Trinity University – $77,776, TCU – $68,000, University of Miami – $64,000, University of Memphis – $39,800, Drexel University – $104,000. He will be attending UT Austin in the fall of 2013.

Stephen Santos

Mentor: Dr. Rochelle Buffenstein

TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas
Stephen serves in the TMI Corps Color Guard and Drum line. He has been a member of the Honor Council, writes for the TMI Times, is in NJHS, NJCL Honor Society and participates in football, the green club, and the Latin club. He received the Headmaster’s Scholarship, the Award for Academic Excellence and the Leadership Award. He is active within his church community and is in the Colombian Squire Association.

Stephen was offered the following scholarships: Wilkins Scholarship – Sewanee, University of Dallas – President’s Scholarship, Trinity University – Murchison Scholarship. He will be attending the University of Notre Dame in the fall of 2013.

Symphony Ovalles

Mentor: Dr. Sara Espinoza

City Center Health Careers School
Symphony is co-president of her school HOSA organization, the treasure of 4H, section leader for her school’s drum line and previously participated in the PREP program. She initiated the creation of and launched a Peer Mediation Group at her school, which has been very successful.

Symphony was offered the Valedictorian Scholarship, Our Lady of the Lake. She will be attending Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the fall of 2013.

Zachary Lindsey
