This year, a change is the classification of students who can apply and the duration of the program. The Voelcker Biomedical Research Academy will be seeking the very best rising high school JUNIORS (current Sophomores in 2017-2018 school year) to partner with outstanding biomedical scientists from UT Health San Antonio to promote excellence in scholarship and biomedical research training for a 2-year period. In year 1, the Academy consists of an engaging, hands-on, 7 -week summer research program, in addition to participation in a number of special research oriented activities throughout the academic year. In year 2, students participate in a faculty-mentored research experience. Students are supported through stipends during the summers of the program and parental involvement is also required.

Teachers together with the administrative team from their respective schools will determine process for selecting up to three candidates for application to the Voelcker Academy. Names are to be submitted as per instructional letters sent to each school in mid-November. Each school team is required to submit a form that will include a description of the criteria utilized to select their applicant candidates. This document is to be submitted with the applicant candidate names. Name submissions will not be accepted without the Criteria for Nominees Selection Form.

Once names have been received, students will receive a link to an electronic application where the teacher recommendation forms will be found. It will be the nominated student's responsibility to collect all documents  by deadline dates to complete their application packet.
