The vision of the Max and Minnie Tomerlin Voelcker Fund Biomedical Research Academy (VBRA) is to provide an immersive biomedical research, educational and college preparatory program for San Antonio high school students. The Voelcker Biomedical Research Academy will be seeking the very best rising high school juniors (current Sophomores in 2018-2019 school year) to partner with outstanding biomedical scientists from UT Health San Antonio to promote excellence in scholarship and biomedical research training for a 2-year period.


In year 1, the Academy consists of an engaging, hands-on, 7 -week summer research program, in addition to participation in a number of special enrichment and research-oriented activities throughout the academic year. In year 2, students participate in a faculty-mentored research experience. Students are supported through stipends during the summers of the program and parental involvement is also required.  The program, now entering its 11th year, seeks to select up to 15 high school students from the greater San Antonio area.  In an effort to continue to select the very best San Antonio has to offer and to ensure students from all high schools are represented in the applicant pool, we are asking for your assistance.


Teachers together with the administrative team from their respective schools will determine process for selecting a maximum of three candidates for application to the Voelcker Academy. Each school team is required to submit a form that will include a description of the criteria utilized to select their applicant candidates. This document is to be submitted with the applicant candidate names. Name submissions will not be accepted without the Criteria for Nominees Selection Form. Disclosure of the nominee selection process is to ensure transparency and to avoid any conflicts of interest; such as familial relationships between nominees and members of the selection committee.  Students whose names are submitted by each school will be given access to an electronic application link where they will complete the application documents online. Paper applications will not be accepted. The final cohort for VBRA Class of Summer 2019 will be selected from those applicants that are invited to interview.
